Prostate Screenings
Prostate screenings, offered for men over 50 years old, are important for early detection of prostate cancer, which often is not accompanied by symptoms. When prostate cancer is diagnosed early, the chance to conquer the disease is greatly increased.
Prostate Problems and Cancer
The prostate can become a source of problems for men, especially after 50 years of age. Treatment of benign prostate can include the minimally invasive technique of laser therapy. One of the treatment options for prostate cancer includes brachytherapy, in which seeds, inserted by the prostate, release a low dose of radiation over a specified period of time.
Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor of the urinary tract. It can take many years for bladder cells to gradually change into bladder cancer. The most common type of bladder cancer is transitional cell carcinoma. Bladder cancer is most common in individuals over the age of 60 and about two to three times more common in men than women.
Interstitial Cystitis (Painful Bladder Syndrome)
Interstitial cystitis, painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition that causes pressure or pain in the bladder. Since symptoms present similarly to other urologic conditions, it is important to receive a thorough medical examination, which includes various tests to properly diagnose and treat interstitial cystitis. Often, a variety of medications or therapy can be prescribed for relief.
Urinary Incontinence (Loss of Bladder Control for Women and Men)
Urinary incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, increases with age, but is not an inevitable part of aging. Through a thorough medical examination, urologists determine the type of incontinence, severity, and underlying cause and recommend treatments best suited for the patient’s overall condition.
Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer is most often detected during procedures for other conditions since it does not cause signs or symptoms in the early stages. Various surgical modalities are available to treat kidney cancer. When surgical removal of the tumor is difficult or even impossible, an alternative option is cryotherapy, a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy the cancer cells.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones, one of the most painful urologic disorders, are hard masses developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any intervention by a physician, but stones that cause lasting symptoms or other complications can be treated by various techniques, most of which do not involve major surgery.
Non-Invasive Lithotripsy (Used to Break Up Kidney Stones)
Lithotripsy is a technique used to break up stones that form in the kidney. Shock waves break the stone into tiny pieces, which are passed out of the body naturally during urination. Using x-ray or ultrasound monitoring, the physicians can watch the progress of the procedure. Lithotripsy prevents patients from having surgery, thus reducing discomfort, complications, hospital stay, and recovery time.
